Unit 1 – Design Thinking Fundamentals (Weeks 1 & 2)

Frameworks covered:

  • Launch Cycle: Something happens in students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators. We start off with a design thinking framework that can be used to “Explain It Like I’m 5”.  The LAUNCH Cycle provides a creative process that can be incorporated into every class at every grade level and for any age.  If you dare to innovate and view creativity as an essential skill, you will empower yourself to change the world—starting right now
  • Design Thinking: Thinking like a designer can transform the way organizations develop products, services, processes, and strategy. This approach, which IDEO calls design thinking, brings together what is desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable.  By using design thinking, you make decisions based on what future customers really want instead of relying only on historical data or making risky bets based on instinct instead of evidence.  It is a ”Process for Creative Problem Solving”
  • Design Sprint: The Google design sprint framework was created in 2010 in partnership with Google Ventures.  A design sprint is a five-phase framework that helps answer critical business questions through rapid prototyping and user testing. Sprints let your team reach clearly defined goals and deliverables and gain key learnings, quickly. The process helps spark innovation, encourage user-centered thinking, align your team under a shared vision, and get you to product launch faster.
